Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Origin of Course/ Examination
Students will be awarded a Diploma in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) by The London Teacher Training College (LTTC), UK. All written examinations and assignments will be assessed and marked by LTTC.
General Aims/ Objectives
The Diploma in TESOL is specifically targeted at those who are interested in teaching English as a second or foreign language. It combines academic study, teaching and teacher management. It also provides you with the proper tools needed to help you embark on your career as an English teacher or, for experienced teachers, it gives you the chance to enhance your teaching skills and to obtain a recognised qualification for career advancement.
Specific Objectives
Upon completion of the course, you will be able to:
- understand how language is acquired
- understand what constitutes error in a language
- know the principles on which modern language teaching is based
- understand what phonetics and phonology are
- know which methodologies can be used to teach English
- know how to use materials and aids to teach English in the class
- know how to organise the class
Target Students/ Admission Requirements
Students should preferably:
- be competent speakers of English;
- have obtained at least 5 credits in GCE 'O' Level with a credit in GCE 'O' Level English as a First Language or;
- have obtained an equivalent qualification, e.g. IELTS Band 6.5/ TOEFL 600/ High School English standards from regional countries.
The minimum age of student must be 21 years old.

Module - Language Theory:
In this module, students will be introduced to the different ways in which we learn a language. The module will cover the principles of language teaching and the different learning needs and styles of students.
Module - Language Teaching Methodology:
In this module, students will learn how to apply the different language teaching methodologies and approaches for different courses. You will also be exposed to a variety of teaching materials and aids that are important for you to carry out an effective teaching plan.
Module - Linguistics & Language Teaching:
Upon completion of this module, you will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of the main phonological, lexical and syntactic features of contemporary English. The different terms and definitions needed to teach the language effectively will be covered in this module.
Module - Classroom Planning and Organisation:
This module introduces you to the various learning needs of individuals and groups of learners. You will be taught on how to design a range of lesson plans, with clear and achievable aims based on the needs and learning styles of different groups of learners. Classroom management, evaluation of teaching materials, methodologies in engaging the interests of the learners, and establishing rapport with them are part of this module teaching.
Practicum:
For the practicum module, practical teaching techniques and regular practical teachings are integrated throughout the lessons. Students will have more than one chance to present a practical teaching session. At the final session, students will have to prepare a lesson plan and present your lesson to the entire class. The trainer will set up a simulated classroom teaching environment and students will be required to teach the audience a lesson you have designed. The trainer and invited guest trainers will evaluate your performance based on a set of guidelines. Feedback will be provided for further improvements.

Examination Grading System
Students who are awarded Grade C, Pass , have completed the course satisfactorily. They have attained an adequate standard in each of the four modules, and have shown they have assimilated the basic principles of TESOL.
Students who are awarded Grade B, Pass with Credit , have shown in addition that they have read more widely than the course requires, and that they are able to relate the theoretical issues studied to practical teaching situations.
Students who are awarded Grade A, Pass with Distinction , have demonstrated considerable further reading, an ability to express original thinking, and have proven to have a sound knowledge of TESOL techniques. They have also indicated an attitude and ability to be able to apply these techniques effectively in the classroom.
