Course Title & Certification
Diploma in TEACHING ENGLISH (DTE) is awarded by International Management School (IMS) Pte Ltd, Singapore.
Asian LifeSkills is appointed by IMS as the marketing partner to offer the DTE course in Asia. It also offers the Master
of Arts in TESOL – awarded by International American University, US which received its initial approval to operate by
the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education to grant degrees under the provisions of the
California Education Code, Section 94900. Students who want to upgrade their qualification in Teaching English
internationally and have successfully completed the DTE can get credit exemption for the MA TESOL course.
Course Objectives
- Understand how learning is developed
- Know the principles on which modern teaching is based
- Learn how to design lesson plans and assessments
- Know which methodologies can be used in teaching
- Acquire how to use materials and aids to teach in the class
- Know how to organise the class
Student’s Entry Criteria
Students should have the following pre-requisites:
- Have 3 years experience in teaching or training, or
- Have at least 5 credits in ‘O’ Levels including English Language, or
- IELTS Band 5.5 / TOEFL 600 / based on High School results from local country.
Course Content & Duration (110 hours)
Module: Learning Theory (10 hours)
- provides an overview of the theories in learning
- traces development of major trends and issues in teaching
- illustrates in practical ways how teachers can incorporate these ideas in their own teaching practice
Module: Course Design for Learning (15 hours)
- current approaches to course design
- introduction to types of syllabus designs and formats for language courses for specific purposes
- instruction in evaluating and writing course materials
Module: Assessment Strategies for Classroom (15 hours)
- provide emerging theory that encourages more performance-based assessment
- hands-on experience in developing performance assessments for the classroom
Module: Methodologies of Teaching (15 hours)
- studies the pedagogical approaches to teaching
- applying theoretical ideas to practicum skills
Module: Classroom Management (15 hours)
- study the principles of effective classroom management
- learn conflict resolution techniques
Teaching Practice (40 hours)
Instructor will evaluate students’ performance and results will
be reflected in transcripts.
